6. Trade Breakouts with a Retest Strategy
Chasing breakouts in futures is dangerous due to slippage and fakeouts. Instead, wait for price to break a key level, then retest that level from the other side. For example, if ES breaks above 4500, wait for a pullback to 4500. If 4500 now acts as support (price bounces with a bullish candlestick pattern), enter long. This reduces risk and improves reward-to-risk ratio. The retest must occur on lower volume than the breakout. If the retest comes on higher volume, the breakout is likely failing.

If timeframes conflict (e.g., daily bullish, 4-hour bearish), stay flat or reduce position size. MTF analysis prevents the classic mistake of shorting a strong uptrend because a 5-minute chart showed an overbought RSI.

After 50 trades, review patterns. You will discover which setups work for you and which don’t. Futures trading is a performance skill. Without feedback, you repeat mistakes. The journal is your edge.
13. Backtest Every Strategy on Historical Data
Before risking real money, test your rules on at least 100 historical setups. Use free platforms like TradingView or thinkorswim. For futures, include commission and slippage (at least 1 tick per side). A strategy that looks great on a daily chart may fail on a 5-minute chart due to noise. For example, anchor VWAP from the previous day’s close. If price is above AVWAP, longs have control. If below, shorts. A break of AVWAP with volume signals a shift in control. 15. Scale Out of Winners, Never Scale Into Losers
Futures leverage tempts traders to add to losing positions (“averaging down”). This is suicide. Instead, scale out of winners. Take 50% profit at 1x risk, 30% at 2x risk, and let the remaining 20% run with a trailing stop. This locks in gains and reduces emotional stress. For losers, exit immediately when your stop is hit. 16. Watch the Yield Curve and Correlated Markets
Futures are interconnected. ES (S&P 500) correlates with NQ (Nasdaq) and YM (Dow). CL (Crude Oil) correlates with CAD futures. GC (Gold) correlates with DX (Dollar Index) inversely. A long gold trade while the dollar is breaking out is a low-probability trade.

Technical analysis cannot prevent emotional mistakes. Set a daily loss limit of 3% of your account. If hit, close the platform and walk away. Futures markets are open nearly 24 hours. There is always another opportunity. Revenge trading after a loss is the number one cause of blown accounts. The loss limit is your circuit breaker.
18. Use Limit Orders for Entries, Stop Orders for Exits
Market orders in futures incur slippage, especially in fast markets. Use limit orders to enter at your predetermined price. If price doesn’t reach your limit, you miss the trade—that’s fine. 20. Trade the Dominant Session
Each futures market has a dominant session. For ES and NQ, the US cash session (9:30 AM – 4:00 PM ET) has the highest volume and cleanest trends. For CL, the US session plus the London close. For GC, the London/New York overlap. For DAX futures, the Frankfurt session. Trading during low-volume Asian hours for ES leads to choppy, mean-reverting price action. Technical patterns fail. Align your trading hours with institutional flow.
21. Combine RSI with Trendlines for Divergence
Relative Strength Index (RSI) divergence is powerful when combined with trendlines. A bearish divergence: price makes a higher high, but RSI makes a lower high. Draw a trendline connecting the two RSI peaks. When RSI breaks below that trendline, enter short. The same for bullish divergence. This filters out false divergences that occur in strong trends. In futures, RSI divergence works best on 15-minute and 1-hour charts. Ignore it on 1-minute charts—noise dominates.
22. Use Pivot Points for Intraday Levels
Classic pivot points (PP, R1, R2, S1, S2) are calculated from the previous day’s high, low, and close. They are self-fulfilling because thousands of traders watch them. In ES futures, price often reverses at R1 or S1 during the first hour. Combine pivot points with volume profile. If R1 aligns with a low-volume node, expect a fast move through it. If R1 aligns with a high-volume node, expect rejection. Pivot points are not magic, but they provide a framework for intraday bias.
23. Avoid Over-Optimization
Optimizing a strategy to fit past data is a trap. A moving average crossover that worked perfectly on 2020 data may fail in 2024. Keep rules simple: two indicators maximum. Test on out-of-sample data (e.g., optimize on 2020-2022, test on 2023-2024). If the strategy fails out-of-sample, discard it. Futures markets change regimes. Robust strategies work across multiple regimes, not just one.
24. Monitor the VIX for Equity Futures
For ES and NQ, the VIX (CBOE Volatility Index) is a leading indicator. When VIX spikes above 20, futures become volatile and technical levels break easily. When VIX is below 15, trends are smoother. A rising VIX with falling ES confirms bearish momentum. A falling VIX with rising ES confirms bullish momentum. 25. Execute with a Pre-Trade Checklist
Before every trade, run a mental checklist: (1) What is the higher timeframe trend? (2) Is price at a key support/resistance? (3) Is volume confirming? (4) What is my stop distance in ATR? (5) What is my risk-reward ratio (minimum 1:2)? (6) Is there any major news in the next 30 minutes? (7) Am I emotionally calm? If any answer is wrong, skip the trade.
