Maintenance margin is the minimum equity that must remain in the account; if equity falls below this threshold, a margin call is triggered. For example, the E-mini S&P 500 futures contract might have an initial margin of $12,000 and maintenance margin of $10,000. If your account equity drops to $9,800, you must deposit at least $2,200 to restore the initial margin—not just the maintenance level. This distinction is critical: falling to maintenance does not mean you can coast; it means you must top up to the initial amount.

Margin Calculation: Exchange Minimums and Broker Add-Ons
