The accumulation phase, typically spanning 25 to 40 years, prioritizes growth through compounding. During this period, market volatility is an ally, allowing dollar-cost averaging to lower the average cost basis of investments. The primary metric here is the savings rate, which has a more significant impact on final wealth than asset selection in the early years.

The decumulation phase, however, inverts the risk profile. Once withdrawals begin, volatility transforms from a tool into a threat. This is the era of sequence-of-returns risk—the danger that a market downturn in the first five years of retirement permanently impairs the portfolio’s ability to recover. A portfolio cannot simply be “spent down”; it must be structured to generate income while maintaining growth potential to outpace inflation.

The Core-Satellite Strategy for Diversification

To balance growth and income, the modern lifetime portfolio employs a core-satellite approach. The core, comprising 60–70% of assets, consists of broad-market index funds or ETFs—low-cost vehicles that capture global equity and fixed-income returns. These positions are held for the long term, requiring minimal intervention. The satellite portion, 30–40%, houses tactical allocations: dividend-growth stocks, real estate investment trusts (REITs), and inflation-protected securities. Healthcare and Long-Term Care Considerations

A lifetime portfolio must account for Medicare premiums, supplemental insurance, and potential long-term care.
