For short-term speculation: Futures offer greater profit potential per price move due to leverage, but with commensurate risk. Day traders and swing traders often prefer futures for their extended hours, lower margin requirements, and tax advantages under Section 1256. Stock day traders face PDT rules and lower leverage.

Many institutional investors arbitrage between futures and the underlying stocks. News that moves oil futures can affect energy stocks; interest rate futures influence bank stocks and REITs. A trader in one market must often monitor the other.

Example: If crude oil futures spike 5% due to Middle East tensions, the next day’s trading in Exxon or Chevron will likely open higher. A stock-only trader could miss the signal; a futures trader could profit directly from the oil move or hedge against it.

Stock trading platforms are ubiquitous, user-friendly, and often include educational content. Futures trading requires more robust software—like NinjaTrader, MetaTrader, or proprietary exchange platforms—that can handle fast order execution, depth of market, and charting with tick-by-tick data.
